The 22nd of March 2018 was a momentous occasion for the Zoroastrian all-party parliamentary group. At 16:00 Zoroastrians gathered in the House of Lords Committee Room 5 for the centenary commemoration of the death of Dr Dadabhai Naoroji, the first Zoroastrian/Indian to be elected into British parliament (1892). The meeting was hosted and presided over by Lord Karan Bilimoria, Co-Chair of the Zoroastrian APPG, and to mark the occasion the group had arranged for three speakers to present essays to the APPG. These speakers included Dr Vikram Visana with his paper ‘Never say die!: Dadabhai Naoroji’s Indianisation of British politics’, Mr Daniel Hunt MA, discussing ‘The British political careers and historical legacies of Dadabhai Naoroji’. And thirdly, speaker Dr Kusoom Vadgama spoke on ‘Naoroji: the Icon of Indian Nationalism.

All three speakers combined personal interest, with intellect and objective truths to produce three truly touching tributes to Naoroji and his lifelong pursuit of Indian interests, and relations. A key theme of all three was Naoroji’s benevolence and philanthropic work as a true Zoroastrian, and his abilities as a skilful politician to manoeuvre through the turbulent atmosphere of parliament enabling the voices of Indians globally to be heard. Naoroji didn’t allow the power of the Empire to distort his views, rather he stood up to the mistreatment of India by the Empire, and actively aimed to correct the Empires faults.

Touching words from Ms T. Ajungla Jamir, Councellor (Political & Extradition) at the Indian High Commission, and closing remarks from Mr Malcom Deboo, President Zoroastrian Trust Funds Europe (ZTFE). Lord Karan Bilimoria thanked the Parliamentary group, and touching final words were delivered from Dr Vadgama who had the room in total suspense with a quote from Naoroji himself, “I am a Hindu, a Muslim, a Parsi, but above all an Indian”. A true citizen of India, but also of Britain, he deserves to be remembered as the greatest patriot of India in the last century.

On the 2nd November, the Zoroastrian All-Party Parliamentary Group hosted an iconic event to mark the contribution of British Indians to UK Parliament, on the eve of Lord Karan Bilimoria’s 10 year anniversary of being appointed a Peer in the House of Lords.

The event was a full house, with over 10 speakers providing their thoughts on Lord Bilimoria’s milestone and the broader contribution of British Indians to UK Parliament. Lord Bourne, the Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for the Department of Communities and Local Government was the opening lead speaker, highlighting the contribution of the Zoroastrian Community and so too the broader British Indian community. With Dadabhai Naoroji being the first MP of Indian descent to be elected in 1892, as a Zoroastrian Parsi, the Reception was naturally being held under the jurisdiction of the Zoroastrian All-Party Parliamentary Group. Lord Bourne rightly pointed out that not too many people were aware, that the first three MPs of Indian descent to sit in the House of Commons were Zoroastrian Parsi. ‘It has put your faith on the map, and tells people more of its history, its beliefs and its onward journey, the Minister stated.

Having witnessed Lord Bilimoria’s achievements in Parliament and beyond, Lord Dholakia and Baroness Prashar, who have been mentors to Karan were proud of his achievements and progress across the years. Baroness Prashar stated how honoured she felt in being considered a mentor to Lord Bilimora, with his significant contribution to entrepreneurship, business, UK-India ties and being a crucial voice for international students in British Politics.

Lord Dholakia also praised Lord Bilimoria as being a beacon of how well the Zoroastrian community had integrated in every country and community whether it be in Gujarat, India or in the UK today. His Excellency, the acting Deputy High Commissioner, Shri Dinesh, K. Patnaik touched on the profound ability of the Zoroastrian community to integrate, but at the same being wonderfully able to hold on to its roots too. Mr Patnaik recollected having a meal at a Zoroastrian wedding, where the food was presented on a leaf, but also with a fork and knife, which the Deputy High Commissioner believes, was emblematic of how the Zoroastrian community had maintained its culture, but simultaneously embracing modernity every step of the way.

The Deputy Leader of the Liberal Democrat Party also mentioned the role the Zoroastrian community had played in preserving Indian culture, whether it be in the arts or literature. As a member of the Commission for Racial Equality that was established in the 1970s, Lord Dholakia, also pointed out the political breakthrough the British Indian community and the broader British Minority and Ethnic (BME) community had made into British politics in recent times. As opposed to the Indian diaspora in East Africa and Fiji that were largely reluctant to enter the political frame, in the House of Lords Lord Dholakia also named Bernie Grant, Keith Vaz, Dianne Abott and Paul Boateng as being the political pioneers of the more diverse Parliament we see before us today. The former President of the Liberal Democrats also stressed the need to see British Indian Parliamentarians as politicians that happen to be of Indian descent and look at their wider contribution to British society.

Conservative Peer, Lord Popat also shared the platform to give his thoughts on Karan’s 10 year anniversary. Lord Popat likened the House of Lords to the world’s best university and how Karan had been an embodiment of learning and absorbing at the institution which is the ‘mother of all Parliaments.’ Lord Popat also cited, Lord Bilimoria’s maiden speech in Parliament 10 years ago this month, where Lord Bilimoria highlighted the untapped potential of the UK-India relationship. Lord Popat poignantly pointed out how Lord Bilimoria’s ambitions in this regard were being realised, with Prime Minister Theresa May, making India her first trade visit destination, which would be pointed out by the recently appointed Peer Lord Gadhia. As contemporaries at the University of Cambridge, Lord Gadhia fondly remembered how he had always seen something special in Karan since his University days and how his presence and contribution is strongly felt, whether it be from business, entrepreneurship or in his capacity as Chancellor at the University of Birmingham.

Shailesh Vara MP also fondly remembered earlier memories when they had discussed their future career paths and anticipated how Karan would be appointed to the House of Lords and he himself would become a member of the elected chamber. Virendra Sharma MP for Ealing Southall, stressed how Lord Bilimoria had always provided a powerful presence and voice when the situation demanded it on key issues, whether it be international students or skill shortages. ‘This is what I admire most’ about Karan, stated the Chair of the Indo-British APPG. The Labour MP underlined how, despite all the success Karan has enjoyed over the years, he has always been a decent and honest human being and has not limited himself to any single compartment, but to the contrary as Lord Popat pointed out earlier, Karan has been a champion for breaking the glass ceiling.

Dorab Mistry, who is the Executive at Godrej Industries Ltd, recounted how a friend, Dr Natubhai Shah, had stated that whilst you may have only one Parsi in Parliament, he is equivalent to a dozen, which Mr Mistry felt encapsulated Karan’s influential contribution. Finally, Mr Mistry fittingly remarked that Karan had always been proud of his Zoroastrian roots, and the Zoroastrian community were just as equally proud of Karan and his achievements. It appears appropriate to end with Lord Gadhia’s complimentary remark that that just like wine, Karan would get better with age.

On the 25 April, we hosted the first All-Party Parliamentary Group meeting of the year. We were privileged to have David Landsman OBE, Head of Tata in the UK, and Sir Dominic Cadbury, Former Chairman of Cadbury Schweppes, give their thoughts on faith-based ethics in business. David Landsman discussed the influence of Zoroastrianism on Jamsetji Tata and how that shaped Tata’s business practices globally. This resonated well with the thoughts of Sir Dominic Cadbury, who detailed the impact that historic Quaker values have had on the Cadbury business. There was a strong overlap between the two, with both speakers emphasising the need for businesses to promote the welfare of workers and to give back to the community.

His Excellency Navtej Sarna, the High Commissioner of India, spoke warmly of his experiences with the Parsi community over the years, even declaring that he worked for Tata as a young graduate. Mr Sarna went on to praise the Zoroastrian contribution to India, noting their role in India’s freedom movement, nation building, and subsequent development, as well as their contributions in many other fields such as sport and music. He highlighted the achievements of Zoroastrians like of Zubin Mehta, who he has a close connection with and has known for many years, as being vital to India’s success and stressed the benefits that India has gained from its decision to allow Parsis to settle in the country over a thousand years ago.

The meeting was covered by Antonia Filmer in the Sunday Guardian Live. The entire article can be accessed by clicking on this link provided.

The Zoroastrian APPG held their Cyrus the Great Day celebration in Parliament on Monday 26th October.

The event centred on Cyrus the Great Day, the day when Cyrus entered Babylon, while also focusing on the similarities between Cyrus’ achievements, such as his Cylinder, and the Magna Carta – which celebrates its 800th anniversary this year.

Dr Rashna Writer, a former lecturer on Zoroastrianism in Ancient and Modern Worlds at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), gave a lecture at the event and she was joined by Professor Almut Hintze FBA, also of SOAS, and Dr John E. Curtis OBE FBA,of the British Library.

The lectures focused on the importance of the Magna Carta, often described as the origin of Parliamentary Constitutionalism, and Cyrus Cylinder, known by many as the origin of Human Rights, and the way in which both documents inform the modern parliament of today.

Cyrus the Great’s magnanimity and the religious freedoms afforded to those in his empire was remarkable and distinguished him as an extraordinary leader. His tolerance and Cylinder certainly left their mark in history and laid the foundations of religious tolerance for future generations.

Representatives of the British and International Parsi community were in full attendance, in addition to leading Parliamentarians and the Indian Acting High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, Dr Virendra Paul. In his opening remarkets, Dr Paul praised Zoroastrians in both India and the UK as “high achievers” adding that “Parsis have dominated not only in business but excelled in several other fields including defence, medicine and technology.”

All Party Parliamentary Groups (APPGs) are run independently of Parliament in order to promote national groups, hobbies and areas of interest. The Zoroastrian APPG, chaired by Lord Bilimoria of Chelsea, has an official remit to promote interests in the Zoroastrian faith and community and to develop links between Zoroastrians and Parliament.

Opening the founding AGM, Lord Bilimoria noted the historic links between Parliament and Zoroastrianism. Citing the legacy of the Zoroastrian Parsis, Dadabhai Naoroji, Sir Mancherjee Bhownagree and Shapurji Saklatvala – the first Indian MPs to sit in Westminster – he noted that they were also the only Asian MPs elected prior to India’s independence in 1947. He noted that between them, “they represented the Liberals, the Conservatives and the Communists (with Labour support) respectively. So an All Party Group would certainly be in keeping with Zoroastrian political history!” Lord Bilimoria was then unanimously elected as the Group’s founding Chair, with Gareth Thomas MP, elected as Secretary/Treasurer. Mr Thomas congratulated Lord Bilimoria’s efforts in founding the APPG, and described himself as an “Honorary Zoroastrian.” The Zoroastrian Centre is located in Mr Thomas’ Harrow West constituency.

Lord Paul, the Chairman of the Caparo Group of companies added “I have had a long relationship with you [Parsis], not only in India but also in the UK. One of the largest suppliers to Caparo is the Tatas in India. We all admire what Zoroastrians have done both in India and here.”

The Rt. Hon. Eric Pickles MP, the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government, was the guest of honour. In his speech, he noted that the first Indian Member of Parliament, Dadabhai Naoroji, was a Zoroastrian Parsi. “What took you so long?” he added, noting that Naoroji had been elected over a century ago, in 1892. Mr Pickles was then presented with a medallion by representatives of the Zoroastrian Trust Funds of Europe – who helped to organise the event.

Other speakers included; Lord Popat of Harrow, a Conservative Whip in the House of Lords and the founding Chair of Conservative Friends of India, Lord Dholakia, Deputy Leader of the Liberal Democrats in the House of Lords, and Keith Vaz MP, a former Labour Minister and the Chair of the influential Home Affairs Select Committee.

The Zoroastrian APPG hopes to develop a programme of events in 2014 to showcase the tremendous efforts and the long-standing links between the Zoroastrian Parsi community in the UK and India.
